PURPOSE: The Wednesday Morning Music Club Wilcox Contest was established in 1945 in memory of Minnie Sneed Wilcox, the founder and life president of Wednesday Morning Music Club. In 1986 the Jean Yarrow Maurer fund was established to honor this distinguished member. In 2003 a supplemental award was established by Sally Strawn Rudd. The contests are designed to encourage a high degree of performance excellence among high school musicians and to assist with their musical education.
ELIGIBILITY: Any student whose parents are legal residents of the City of Austin, Travis County, Leander ISD or Round Rock ISD shall be eligible to compete for these awards. Students who are enrolled in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grades are eligible to compete for the Wilcox awards, with the exception of former first-place winners. Only students who are 12th grade graduating seniors are eligible to compete for the Maurer awards.
AWARDS:
Wilcox awards: 1st Place $500, 2nd Place $425
Maurer awards: 1st place $850, 2nd Place $625
Sally Strawn Rudd Supplemental award: $250 at the discretion of the judges
REPERTOIRE: All contestants must perform three memorized solo selections in contrasting styles chosen from three different periods of music. Vocalists must perform one selection from each of the following categories: 1)an art song in the original language 2)a sacred song (not a hymn) 3)an Italian song or aria sung in Italian.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
PERFORMANCE: 1)Auditions will be limited to ten minutes total. The time between pieces is counted in the ten minute period. Mark clearly any necessary cuts. 2)Please provide one set of your contest music for the judges. Soloists with accompanists need supply only the solo part. Use of photo-copied music will disqualify the contestant because copyright laws prohibit the use of photocopies. 3)You will receive the judges' comments at a later date.
TIME & PLACE: Saturday, March 20, 2010, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., in Jessen Auditorium in the Homer Rainey Hall Building, The University of Texas at Austin, 21st St. and University. Contestants must arrive (with accompanists if applicable) 20 minutes before their assigned times and must agree to perform earlier than scheduled, if required by the committee.
